Contradictions, Op. 1 began as a college composition project exploring the creation of musical ideas from a single scale. What started as an academic exercise developed into a set of three contrasting works—Prelude, Pastorale, and Marche—each drawing its identity from the same underlying musical material. Throughout the work, contrasting harmonies, rhythmic gestures, textures, and characters continually place opposing musical ideas side by side. Restlessness gives way to lyricism, motion contrasts with stillness, and consonance and dissonance coexist throughout the set. Despite their differences, the three movements remain connected by their shared musical origins, creating a work built around the idea that contrast itself can provide unity.
Performance & Musical Notes
The three movements of Contradictions, Op. 1 each present a distinct musical character while sharing a common harmonic foundation. The Prelude is restless and energetic, shaped by changing meters, chromatic harmony, and rhythmic momentum. Performers should emphasize its forward motion while allowing the contrasting gestures and shifts in texture to remain clear. The Pastorale provides the work’s principal contrast. More spacious and lyrical, it calls for a flexible approach to phrasing, careful voicing, and sensitivity to resonance. Its quieter character should feel like a genuine release from the tension and activity of the Prelude rather than simply a slower continuation of it. The Marche closes the set with a more deliberate and assertive character. Rhythmic clarity and articulation are central, but the movement should retain enough flexibility to allow its contrasting harmonic colors and gestures to emerge. The goal throughout the work is not to minimize its opposing ideas, but to heighten their differences while revealing the musical relationships that connect them.
